What is a hashtag?
A hashtag is simply a way to index a topic. Popular social networks like Twitter and Instagram make use of hashtags to categorise topics into easily searchable directories.
Instagram hashtags are probably by far the most useful of all hashtags… but you need to make sure you’re using the right ones and they are relevant and meaningful to your niche.
Hashtags originated on Twitter! But are now found on many varying platforms… also with carrying levels of success. Facebook is one spot where I wouldn’t bother with them.
I’ve seen good success using specific and very limited hashtags on Pinterest and LinkedIn to promote posts. A hashtag will get you seen in a search for a specific tag… and also often will get you seen for a general search for those words as well.

There are many different types of hashtags… and you can utilise different versions for different results…be mindful that those generic ones are also going to return a huge amount of hits… so, you might want to niche down a little unless your super confident in getting noticed amongst the fray.
- Events #womenintech
- Acronyms #OOTD
- Trends #selfcaresunday
- Niche #travelblogger
- Branded #nike
Use them to get in front of your ideal audience and hopefully start conversations with these people. The real goal behind reaching your ideal audience is to create community right?
So, make sure when you’re using hashtags that you have a goal in mind… not just likes or comments.. But getting your content in front of the people who are mewaninfgulfto your niche or business.
No point in getting a whole heap of likes on apost that’s nothing to do with your target audience….
People will often search by hashtag to find people to follow … so all the more reason to get your hashtag game on point.
Adding the appropriate hashtags to your posts will get you featured on the niche page for that tag – an example below is #vegan … adding this to your posts means you will show up in the feed for #vegan
- Increase your brand presence on social media
- Attract a wider audience for your content
- Position you as the expert in your field
- Create a community around your niche
Quick Hashtag Tips
- Be mindful of spamming- use only a handful of highly relevant tags on your posts
- You can use up to 30 on Instagram, but I’d say that was overkill, 6- 10 is more than plenty, or it looks spammy, especially if you’re using the same ones over and over again… this can also cause Instagram or Pinterest to flag you as spammy … which nobody wants
- Use no more than 3-6 on Pinterest, you can use 20! But I would caution against this. Pinterest is super finicky about spam and that’s a sure fire way to get pinged for being a spammer
- 2-3 on Linkedin is also more than enough
- One hashtag on Twitter will get you in front of the right audience… using #’s on Twitter is a great way to provide context to your Tweet when you have very few words to use … plus you don’t want to use up your character limit solely on #’s! Lol
- Use a super cool tool like Jasper to create your hashtags on your social posts… try using a command like “Write a list of hashtags for {TOPIC}” – it’s like MAGIC 💫
- Stay in your lane – be specific – or you’ll attract the wrong audience
- Memorable – don’t get fancy, use well know tags if they are highly relevant
- Think like you’re doing keyword research… assess volume over difficulty to get noticed!
- You want to use hashtags responsibly so that you are getting seen by those eyes that matter but not so much or so recklessly that you’re being flagged as spam
Easy!
You can search for people in your niche and see what sort of tags they are using successfully. For example. If you’re a foodie and post about gluten free food, search #glutenfree.

Click on the top one …
Then, click through to a post that feels like a match with your niche.
If you scroll down, often you’ll see a list of tags this author has used. Some of these might just be a great fit for you as well.
Or, you can use a hashtag generator like All Hashtag – easy to use and gives you a list of top, random or live tags. Just be selective when choosing which ones you use!
